Why Disney Cruise Line Is Perfect for Multigenerational Travel

(And why our January sailing was pure magic)

One of my favorite things about being a travel advisor is that I actually get to experience what I recommend to my clients — and our recent Disney Cruise Line sailing out of Galveston was a perfect example of why Disney truly shines for families of all ages.

This trip was extra special because it was truly multigenerational. I traveled with my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, my daughter, my nieces, and my nephew. Our crew of kids included a 9-year-old, two 8-year-olds, and a very busy 3-year-old — which meant we had lots of different personalities, energy levels, and needs to keep happy.

And Disney? Absolutely delivered.

Boarding Day Magic

We boarded the ship on January 2nd around 1:00 PM, and this turned out to be the perfect boarding window. We walked right on, grabbed lunch, and had plenty of time to settle in before our rooms were ready — which happened surprisingly quickly.

Let me just say this:

Disney’s embarkation day buffet might be the best lunch buffet I’ve ever seen at sea.

We’re talking:

Fresh peel-and-eat shrimp
Crab claws
Premium quality hot and cold selections
Kid-friendly options and elevated adult favorites

It didn’t feel like “boarding day food.” It felt like a cruise that was already in full swing.

After lunch, we explored the ship, got everyone settled, and then headed up to the top deck for one of my favorite Disney traditions…

Sail Away With Mickey & Friends

The Sail Away party is such a special way to kick off the cruise. Music, dancing, confetti, and Mickey and friends welcoming everyone aboard — the kids were immediately hooked. You could feel the excitement buzzing through the entire ship.

From that moment on, we knew we were in for something special.

Shows, Dinner & Disney’s Perfect Evening Flow

Our first show was at 6:00 PM, followed by dinner at 8:00 PM — and I have to say, I absolutely loved the timing.

That hour-to-hour-and-a-half window in between gave us time to:

Meet characters
Explore activities
Let kids burn off energy
Relax a bit before dinner

It made evenings feel fun, not rushed — which is huge when traveling with little ones.

A Day at Sea & Princess Dreams

Our sea day brought one of the most magical moments of the trip: The Royal Gathering — a special princess meet-and-greet.

My niece also decided this was her moment to shine and headed to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where she picked out a beautiful Tiana dress and had her hair styled like a true princess. Watching her walk around the ship afterward was pure Disney magic.

Rotational Dining = Never-Ending Fun

One of the things Disney does better than anyone is their rotational dining program — meaning you rotate between themed dining rooms, and your waitstaff follows you the entire cruise.

Our dining rotation:

Night 1: Lumière’s
Night 2: Animator’s Palate
Nights 3 & 4: Rapunzel’s Royal Table
Final Night: Back to Lumière’s

Every restaurant has its own personality, theme, and entertainment — and honestly, dining became one of our favorite parts of each day.

Animator’s Palate was hands-down my favorite.

I won’t spoil the magic, but let’s just say there’s something very special that happens during your meal that brings everyone at the table together in the most Disney way possible.

Port Days… Our Way

When we arrived in Cozumel, we actually decided to stay onboard — and honestly, it turned out to be one of our favorite days of the entire cruise.

We dropped the kids off at the kids’ club for the first part of the morning (more on that in a minute), and the adults headed straight to the Rainforest Room in the Senses Spa — which is only $40 on port days and absolutely worth it.

It was peaceful, quiet, and exactly what we needed.

There are beautiful steam rooms, specialty showers, heated loungers, and a calm, relaxing vibe that makes you forget you’re even on a ship. We spent a couple of hours decompressing while the kids played — and it felt like the perfect balance of family time and adult time.

Later that afternoon, we reunited, grabbed lunch, changed into swimsuits, and headed to the pools. The ship was noticeably quieter since so many guests were ashore — which meant:

Shorter lines for the waterslides
Easier access to loungers
A calmer, more relaxed pool atmosphere

It truly felt like we had the ship to ourselves.

Progreso & Pirate Night

The next day in Progreso, we again chose to stay onboard and enjoy another relaxing pool day — and that evening was one of the highlights of the entire cruise: Pirate Night.

We all dressed up as pirates, headed back to Rapunzel’s Royal Table for dinner, and then made our way up on deck for the festivities.

The kids loved:

The energy, music, and themed entertainment

And then — the fireworks.

Disney is the only cruise line allowed to do fireworks at sea, and experiencing that moment under the night sky with the kids was absolutely magical. It’s one of those moments you don’t forget.

I have to take a moment to talk about Disney’s kids club — because it truly sets Disney apart.

Unlike many cruise lines that limit kids club hours, Disney’s kids club is open from 9:00 AM until midnight — and you can drop your kids off almost anytime.

One of my favorite touches is what happens during second seating dinner (8:00 PM):

Kids can eat with you
Kids club counselors come into the dining room
After dinner, they personally walk the kids to the kids club
You simply check them in, they scan their wristband, and off they go

This gives parents the chance to enjoy a quieter, more relaxed dinner — while knowing their kids are having the time of their lives.

It’s thoughtful. It’s seamless. And it makes traveling with kids so much easier.

The Little Disney Touches That Matter

Disney is also a little more “old school” in the best way when it comes to tipping.

Your gratuities are prepaid, but you’re given envelopes with a breakdown of how much each crew member receives — and if someone went above and beyond (which, let’s be honest, they usually do), you can easily add extra cash and personally thank them.

It’s a small thing — but it creates meaningful connections and allows you to recognize truly exceptional service.

There’s something extraordinary about Costa Rica — a country where lush rainforests meet volcanic hot springs, where the air hums with life, and where pura vida (pure life) isn’t just a saying, it’s a way of being.

During my recent trip , I had the opportunity to explore two incredible regions — Monteverde and Rincón de la Vieja — while meeting with local suppliers, hotels, and tourism boards . Monteverde: The Cloud Forest Adventure

Our journey began in Monteverde , high in the misty mountains of Costa Rica . The drive alone was spectacular — winding roads, sweeping vistas, and fresh, crisp mountain air.

Monteverde’s cloud for est feels otherworldly — lush, green, and alive with the sounds of nature. One of the most thrilling moments of the trip was ziplining at Treetopia Park , where I soared through the treetops and clouds with breathtaking views stretching across the valleys below. The experience was both exhilarating and serene — a must for anyone seeking adventure wrapped in beauty.

When we weren’t ziplining, we wandered along hanging bridges suspended above the rainforest canopy. From that vantage point, I spotted toucans, butterflies, and even a mischievous monkey or two.

And then there was the sunset.

Of all the places I’ve visited, the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen was in the mountains of Monteverde — golden light spilling across the hills as the clouds turned soft shades of pink and lavender. It was one of those moments that makes you pause, take a deep breath, and feel deeply grateful.

Though September is part of Costa Rica ’s green (rainy) season , the weather worked perfectly in our favor. Mornings were clear and bright for exploration, while the gentle afternoon rain brought everything to life, adding to the lushness and tranquility of the experience.
