What Is a Single Supplement & How Can You Avoid It?

Traveling Solo? Let's Talk About the Single Supplement

Solo travel continues to grow, and I hear from more and more travelers who are ready to stop waiting for someone else to be available before taking the trip they want.

I love that.

Unfortunately, there's one part of traveling solo that can come as a pretty unpleasant surprise: the single supplement.

What Is a Single Supplement on a Cruise?

"A cruise single supplement is an additional charge a solo traveler may pay when occupying a cabin designed and priced for two guests."

Most cruise fares are advertised per person, based on double occupancy. That means the cruise line is expecting two people to occupy the cabin. For example, if a cruise is advertised at $3,000 per person, the cruise line is expecting to receive approximately $6,000 for that cabin. If one person wants the same cabin, the cruise line may charge a single supplement to make up for some or all of that lost second fare.

Why Do Solo Cruisers Pay More?

Depending on the cruise line, itinerary, cabin category, and sailing date, that supplement can be significant. In some cases, a solo traveler can end up paying close to what two people would have paid for the cabin.

And yes... I know how frustrating that sounds.

However, not every cruise line handles solo pricing the same way. Some have dedicated solo cabins designed and priced specifically for one person, while others regularly offer reduced single supplements or promotions where the extra fee is waived completely. Choosing the right cruise line and the right sailing makes all the difference.

Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Crystal

Crystal is one of my favorite options to look at for luxury solo travelers. In addition to offering dedicated Solo Guest Rooms, Crystal regularly features select voyages with reduced solo supplements. This gives solo travelers an opportunity to experience a true luxury cruise without necessarily paying double the advertised fare.

Crystal is also particularly appealing because of the onboard atmosphere. There are plenty of opportunities to socialize, dine with others, and meet fellow travelers, but you can also easily enjoy your own space whenever you want it.

Which Cruise Lines Offer Reduced Single Supplements?

Many top-tier cruise lines are recognizing the boom in solo travel and adapting their inventory. Beyond dedicated solo rooms, lines frequently run capacity-controlled promotions that waive or heavily discount the single supplement on specific itineraries—especially during shoulder seasons or repositioning cruises.

Are River Cruises Good for Solo Travelers?

River cruising is an exceptional option for solo travelers, and several European river cruise lines stand out for their solo-friendly policies:

  • AmaWaterways: This line periodically offers reduced or completely waived single supplements on select sailings and cabin categories. Some of its European ships also feature a limited number of staterooms specifically designed for single occupancy. River cruising naturally works well for solo travelers because excursions are organized in groups, and the intimate size of the ships makes it much easier to meet fellow passengers.
  • Tauck: Another company worth considering for high-end European river cruises. Tauck waives the single supplement on Category 1 cabins on its European river cruises, meaning a solo traveler pays the exact same per-person fare as someone sharing the cabin. These cabins are limited, so booking early is essential. Tauck also offers solo savings on select other categories and departures.

How to Find Cruises With Low or No Single Supplements

Look Beyond the Percentage

Here's where travelers sometimes get caught up in the numbers: a cruise advertising a "0% single supplement" isn't automatically the best value. You still need to evaluate:

  • The actual total price
  • What is included in the fare (dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities)
  • Cabin size and location
  • Itinerary and shore excursions
  • The overall onboard experience

A $4,000 cruise with no single supplement isn't necessarily a better deal than a $3,000 cruise with a 25% supplement. The final price and overall experience matter more than the percentage advertised.

Timing Can Make a Huge Difference

Solo pricing is often capacity-controlled. A cruise line might offer a fantastic solo rate on one departure and a much higher supplement on the exact same itinerary two weeks later. That's why flexibility can save you hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars.

Traveling Solo Doesn't Mean Traveling Alone

This is the biggest misconception I hear. Cruises and guided tours are some of the easiest ways to travel solo because you're surrounded by people who share your love for travel. Excursions naturally bring people together, and meals, lounges, and onboard activities provide organic opportunities to socialize. You can spend the afternoon exploring with a group and have dinner by yourself whenever you choose.

My Advice for Solo Travelers

Don't automatically assume a cruise or tour is too expensive just because you're traveling alone. The key is knowing where to look, staying flexible with your dates, and keeping an eye out for changing promotions.

You shouldn't have to wait for someone else to be ready before you start seeing the world.

If you're searching for the best adults-only resort in Puerto Vallarta, Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway deserves a spot on your list. I recently stayed here to experience it firsthand, and I came away impressed by the food, service, and unbeatable location. While no resort is perfect for everyone, Villa Premiere is an excellent choice for travelers who want a relaxing beachfront stay with easy access to everything Puerto Vallarta has to offer.

That travel credit sounds great… but do you actually know what it means? Travel credits and rewards have become a huge marketing tool in the travel industry lately. And to be fair, sometimes they really can work in your favor. But I think a lot of travelers don’t fully understand what’s happening behind the scenes, so I wanted to explain it a little more clearly. First, this is not me saying anyone is doing anything illegal or unethical. Different companies structure their business models differently. But I do think consumers deserve transparency so they can make informed decisions. Most travel advisors, including me, earn a commission from the supplier after your trip is booked. That means the cruise line, hotel, tour company, etc. pays the advisor directly. In most cases, you are paying the same price you would pay booking direct. Now, some companies advertise that they “give commission back” to the traveler in the form of future travel credit. On the surface, that sounds fantastic. Who wouldn’t want money back toward another trip? But here’s the part most people don’t think about: it’s usually not an immediate discount on the current booking. It’s typically a future credit that can only be used later under certain terms and conditions. That matters because: the company still keeps the money now you may or may not use the credit later credits can expire travel prices increase over time life happens and plans change Honestly, it works a lot like gift cards. Some people absolutely maximize them and get great value from them. Other people forget they exist or never fully redeem them. And to be fair, if you travel frequently and consistently use the same company, those credits absolutely can add up and benefit you. For organized repeat travelers, it may genuinely be a good fit. But I think it’s important for travelers to understand the difference between: an immediate savings today vs. a future travel credit tied to another purchase later Those are not the same thing. Personally, I always encourage travelers to focus on: the final total cost the actual value they’re receiving service and support transparency and whether the pricing structure truly makes sense for how THEY travel At the end of the day, you work hard for your vacation budget. You deserve to understand exactly where your money is going and how these programs actually work before making a decision.

Believe it or not, Alaska 2027 is already booking quickly — and I have already booked four Alaska trips for 2027! If Alaska has been sitting on your bucket list, now is the time to start planning. Many travelers assume they can wait another year or two before making decisions, but Alaska cruise season is one of the most in-demand cruise markets, especially for the most desirable cabins and itineraries. The clients who book early almost always get the best options. The Best Cabins Go First For Alaska, cabin selection matters more than many other destinations. Scenic cruising through Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, and the Inside Passage is a huge part of the experience, and many travelers specifically want: Mid-ship cabins Larger balconies Aft-facing balconies Mini suites or suites Connecting cabins for families Certain deck locations These cabin categories are often the very first to sell out. Princess Cruises and Holland America Line continue to be two of the most popular cruise lines for Alaska because of their excellent itineraries, strong glacier access, and long history in the region. Because they are so popular, their prime cabin inventory can disappear surprisingly early.

(And why our January sailing was pure magic) One of my favorite things about being a travel advisor is that I actually get to experience what I recommend to my clients — and our recent Disney Cruise Line sailing out of Galveston was a perfect example of why Disney truly shines for families of all ages. This trip was extra special because it was truly multigenerational. I traveled with my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, my daughter, my nieces, and my nephew. Our crew of kids included a 9-year-old, two 8-year-olds, and a very busy 3-year-old — which meant we had lots of different personalities, energy levels, and needs to keep happy. And Disney? Absolutely delivered.

If you’re beginning to think about travel in 2026, now is the ideal time to start planning. Many of the most popular destinations and cruise itineraries sell out far earlier than travelers expect — often a year or more in advance. Wave Season (January through March) is known for strong pricing and promotions, but the real advantage of booking early is availability. From river cruises and Italy hotels to Alaska balcony cabins and cherry blossom season in Japan, early planning ensures better choices and fewer compromises. Below are five types of trips you should be booking now if 2026 travel is on your radar.

There’s something extraordinary about Costa Rica — a country where lush rainforests meet volcanic hot springs, where the air hums with life, and where pura vida (pure life) isn’t just a saying, it’s a way of being. During my recent trip , I had the opportunity to explore two incredible regions — Monteverde and Rincón de la Vieja — while meeting with local suppliers, hotels, and tourism boards .
